Rules of the road is the largest section of the K53 learners test. These are real questions from the K53 Examiner bank, with the correct answer marked and explained.
201. You may not obtain a learner's license? Select the correct combination #
You are declared unfit to obtain a driving licence for a certain period and that period still prevails. (correct answer)
Your licence was suspended temporarily and the suspension has not yet expired. (correct answer)
You already have a licence that authorizes the driving of the same vehicle class. (correct answer)
Why: You cannot obtain a learner's licence if you already hold a licence for that class of vehicle, if you have been declared unfit for a period that is still running, or if your licence is under a suspension that has not yet expired.
202. You may carry passengers in a vehicle that is being towed? #
If you only travel at 35 km/h.
Only if the vehicle that tows something is a tractor.
If the vehicle that is being towed is a semi-trailer. (correct answer)
Why: Passengers may only be carried in a towed vehicle when that vehicle is a semi-trailer. Otherwise a towed vehicle carrying persons may not exceed 30 km/h.
203. What is the duty of a driver when driving on a public road that has been divided into two or more roadways? #
You are allowed to drive on any part of the roadway after sunset, or when there is no other traffic on the road.
You may drive on any part of the roadway.
Drive on the left-hand roadway unless directed or shown to do so by a traffic officer or traffic sign. (correct answer)
Why: Keep to the left-hand roadway, unless a traffic officer or a road traffic sign directs you otherwise.
204. When are you allowed to drive your vehicle on the right -hand side of a road with traffic in both directions? #
When you switch the emergency lights of your vehicle on.
Under no circumstances.
When a traffic officer shows you to do so. (correct answer)
Why: When a traffic officer directs you to do so. Otherwise you must keep to the left-hand side of the roadway.

If a police officer instructs you to do so. (correct answer)
When that vehicle is going to turn right and the road is wide enough that it is not necessary to drive on the shoulder. (correct answer)
Why: Passing on the left is permitted where the road has two or more lanes in the same direction, when the vehicle ahead is turning right and there is room without using the shoulder, and when a traffic officer directs you to do so.
206. What is the longest period that a vehicle may be parked on one place on a road outside urban areas? #

208. When driving a motor vehicle, the minimum safe following distance is? #
12 meters at 120kph, (1meter for every 10 kph.)
A distance determined by the 2 second rule. (correct answer)
A driver may follow as close as they want so that overtaking is easier when the gap is there.
Why: The two-second rule for light motor vehicles: pick a fixed point, and you should pass it no sooner than two seconds after the vehicle ahead. Heavy vehicles need three seconds, and both increase in poor conditions.

A vehicle may not park on a public road unless in a parking bay.
Not more than 1m from the edge of the roadway. (correct answer)
