Why: A temporary sign has exactly the same legal significance as a permanent one. Temporary signs are used at roadworks and incidents, and disobeying one is an offence in the same way.

Why: A dipped (dim) beam must let you see a person, vehicle or substantial object at least 45 metres ahead, without dazzling oncoming drivers.

  • Allow someone to ride on the bumper of your vehicle
  • Put your arm out of the window only to give legal hand signals. (correct answer)

Why: You may put your arm out of the window only to give a recognised hand signal. No other part of any person's body may project beyond the vehicle.

Why: You may not overtake when approaching a curve or the crest of a hill, or when dust, smoke or other conditions limit your view to about 100 metres — in each case you cannot see far enough to complete the manoeuvre safely.

Why: A vehicle may not stand in the same place on a public road outside an urban area for longer than 24 hours.

147. When driving a motor vehicle, the minimum safe following distance is? #

  • A distance determined by the 2 second rule. (correct answer)
  • A driver may follow as close as they want so that overtaking is easier when the gap is there.
  • 12 meters at 120kph, (1meter for every 10 kph.)

Why: The two-second rule for light motor vehicles: pick a fixed point, and you should pass it no sooner than two seconds after the vehicle ahead. Heavy vehicles need three seconds, and both increase in poor conditions.

148. You are in heavy traffic in the right-hand lane, the car in front wants to turn into his driveway and has stopped, waiting for heavy oncoming traffic, what do you do? #

  • Wait behind the car until you get the opportunity to pass, and when its safe, proceed (correct answer)
  • Hoot, wave and pass
  • Switch on your left indicator and move to the left lane

Why: Wait behind that vehicle until it is safe to pass. You may not use the shoulder or squeeze past unsafely just because the car ahead is stationary.

149. A light motor vehicle fitted with a spot-lamp may be used on a public road. #

  • With a light that’s beam can shine in any direction.
  • If it’s a breakdown vehicle at a collision scene. (correct answer)
  • If the lights are not connected.

Why: A spot-lamp may only be used for a legitimate operational purpose — for example a breakdown vehicle working at a collision scene. It may not be used as an ordinary driving light.

150. What is true with regard to seatbelts? Choose the correct combination #

  • You need not wear a seatbelt when reversing. (correct answer)
  • If your vehicle has seatbelts in the rear, it must be worn. (correct answer)
  • If the front seat has a seatbelt your only passenger may not sit at the back where there is no seatbelt.
  • Children younger than 14 years need not wear seatbelts.

Why: Seatbelts must be worn whenever the vehicle is moving forward, including by rear-seat passengers where belts are fitted. They are not required while reversing.
