Showing questions 101–125 of 212

101. When the robot is red and the green arrow flashes to the right, it shows you that. #

  • If you want to turn right, you may go (correct answer)
  • Only pedestrians may walk.
  • All traffic must turn right there.

Why: The arrow gives you a protected movement in the direction it points. On a red light with a green right arrow you may turn right, but not proceed straight.

102. When driving a vehicle alone, what documents must you carry with you? #

  • Any person’s valid driver’s licence if you only have a learner’s licence.
  • Your original valid driver’s licence. (correct answer)
  • A certified copy of your driver’s licence and ID document.

Why: You must carry your original valid driving licence. A copy is not sufficient, and a learner may not drive alone at all.

103. What is the duty of a driver when driving on a public road that has been divided into two or more roadways? #

  • Drive on the left-hand roadway unless directed or shown to do so by a traffic officer or traffic sign. (correct answer)
  • You are allowed to drive on any part of the roadway after sunset, or when there is no other traffic on the road.
  • You may drive on any part of the roadway.

Why: Keep to the left-hand roadway, unless a traffic officer or a road traffic sign directs you otherwise.

104. Where may you legally stop with your vehicle? #

  • 6m from a railway crossing. (correct answer)
  • 5m from a pedestrian crossing.
  • 4m from a tunnel.

Why: You may not stop within 6 metres of a railway crossing. Beyond the prohibited distances, and where no sign forbids it, stopping is permitted.

105. You may not? #

  • Have passengers in the vehicle if you only have a learner's licence.
  • Leave your vehicle unattended while the engine is running. (correct answer)
  • Drive in reverse for more than a 100m.

Why: You may not leave your vehicle unattended while the engine is running. Switch the engine off and apply the parking brake before you leave it.

106. The licence for your vehicle (clearance certificate) is valid for? #

  • 12 months (correct answer)
  • 90 days
  • 21 days

Why: A motor vehicle licence is valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually.

107. How far behind a vehicle must the warning triangle be placed if your car breaks down? #

  • At least 100m.
  • At least 45m (correct answer)
  • At least 10m.

Why: The emergency warning sign must be placed at least 45 metres behind the vehicle, measured along the road, so approaching drivers get enough warning.

108. When are you allowed to drive on the shoulder of a road? Choose the correct combination #

  • When you have a flat tyre and you want to park there to change it. (correct answer)
  • In daytime when you want to allow another vehicle pass you and its safe. (correct answer)
  • When on a freeway with 4 lanes in both directions, you want to drive slower than 120 km/h.
  • Any time if you want to let another vehicle to pass you.

Why: Only in daylight, on a road with one lane in each direction, while you are being overtaken, and only if it can be done safely — for example when you have a flat tyre and need to pull off.

109. While you are driving, it is illegal if a passenger? #

  • Fiddles with the car radio's volume knob.
  • Sits directly behind you when you only have a learner’s licence.
  • Rides on the bumper of your vehicle. (correct answer)

Why: No person may be carried on any part of a vehicle not designed for passengers — riding on the bumper is illegal and extremely dangerous.

110. When a motor vehicle is standing still, what must the driver do to make sure the motor vehicle does not move? #

  • The driver must hold the service brake.
  • The parking brake must be applied. (correct answer)
  • The gear lever must be put in the neutral position.

Why: Apply the parking brake. The footbrake stops the vehicle; the parking brake is what keeps it stationary.

111. You may not? Choose the correct combination #

  • Use your vehicle without a cap on the fuel tank. (correct answer)
  • Run the engine unattended. (correct answer)
  • Spin the wheels of your vehicle when pulling off. (correct answer)

Why: You may not spin the wheels when pulling off, drive without a cap on the fuel tank, or leave the engine running unattended.

112. The maximum distance between two vehicles which are being towed is? #

  • 3.5 (correct answer)
  • 1.8
  • 2.5

Why: The distance between a towing vehicle and the vehicle being towed may not exceed 3,5 metres.

113. If you only have a learner’s licence for a light motor vehicle? #

  • No passengers are allowed with you in the vehicle.
  • You are not allowed to drive on a freeway.
  • There must be someone with you in the vehicle with the same driving licence. (correct answer)

Why: A learner driver may only drive while accompanied by a person seated next to them who holds a valid driving licence for that same class of vehicle.

114. What is the duty of a driver when refilling the fuel tank of a motor vehicle? #

  • If they are filling the tank with diesel not petrol.
  • The driver may not allow the engine to run whilst flammable fuel is being transferred to the fuel tank. (correct answer)
  • Is allowed to start the vehicle while fuel is being pumped to check If the tank is full.

Why: The engine must be switched off while flammable fuel is transferred to the tank. A running engine near fuel vapour is a fire risk.

115. In which case is it permitted to travel with only the parking lights of your vehicle switched on? #

  • When driving in heavy rain.
  • In none of the above cases (correct answer)
  • When dusk is falling

Why: Never. Parking lamps are for a stationary vehicle. When lights are required you must use headlamps, rear lamps and number plate lamps.

116. When you want to change lanes and drive from one lane to the other you must? Choose the correct combination #

  • Use the mirrors of your vehicle to ensure that you know of other traffic around you. (correct answer)
  • Switch on your indicator in time to show what you are going to do. (correct answer)
  • Only do it when it is safe to do so. (correct answer)

Why: Check your mirrors so you know what is around you, signal in good time, and only move across when it is safe. All three steps are required, in that order.

117. If you see that someone wants to overtake you, you must? Choose the correct combination #

  • Keep to the left as far as it is safe to do so. (correct answer)
  • Not drive faster. (correct answer)
  • Give hand signals to allow the person to pass safely.

Why: Keep as far left as is safe and do not increase your speed. Making it harder for the other driver to complete the overtake is both dangerous and an offence.

118. Unless otherwise shown by a sign, the general speed limit in an urban area is km/h. #

  • 80
  • 60 (correct answer)
  • 100

Why: The general speed limit inside an urban area is 60 km/h. Outside urban areas it is 100 km/h, and on a freeway 120 km/h, unless a sign shows otherwise.

119. When may you pass another vehicle that has stopped at a pedestrian crossing? #

  • You can pass if it’s safe to do so.
  • You may pass only once the pedestrian has crossed.
  • It is prohibited to pass any vehicle that has stopped at a pedestrian crossing. (correct answer)

Why: Never. Passing a vehicle stopped at a pedestrian crossing is prohibited — it has stopped for a pedestrian you cannot see.

120. The legal speed limit which you may drive? #

  • Is shown to you by signs next to the road. (correct answer)
  • Can be determined by yourself if you look at the number of lanes the road has.
  • Is always 120km/h outside an urban area.

Why: The applicable limit is the one shown on the road traffic signs beside the road. Where no sign is displayed, the general speed limits apply.

121. What is important with regard to the hooter of your vehicle? #

  • Someone must hear it from a distance of at least 50m.
  • You may use it to get the attention of someone that you would like to offer a lift.
  • The tone of pitch of the sound may not change. (correct answer)

Why: The hooter must give a single, constant tone — the pitch may not change. Multi-tone or siren-like devices are not permitted on an ordinary vehicle.

122. How far may you park from the left edge of a roadway outside an urban area? #

  • Not more than 450mm from the edge of the roadway.
  • Not more than 1m from the edge of the roadway. (correct answer)
  • A vehicle may not park on a public road unless in a parking bay.

Why: Outside an urban area you may not park with any part of the vehicle within 1 metre of the edge of the roadway — park no more than 1 metre from that edge, off the roadway itself.

123. The distance it takes the driver of a motor vehicle to stop it is? Choose the correct combination #

  • Longer on a wet road than on a dry road. (correct answer)
  • Longer if the vehicle is traveling at a higher speed. (correct answer)
  • Longer if the vehicle is loaded. (correct answer)

Why: Stopping distance increases on a wet road, at higher speed, and when the vehicle is loaded. All three lengthen the distance you need, which is why following distance must grow with them.

124. An accident in which no one was injured must be reported within? #

  • 24 hours (correct answer)
  • 36 hours
  • 48 hours

Why: An accident must be reported to a police officer within 24 hours, whether or not anyone was injured.

125. You may pass another vehicle on the left-hand side if it? Choose the correct combination #

  • Drives in a town in the right-hand lane with 2 lanes in the same direction (correct answer)
  • Indicates that it is going to turn right (correct answer)
  • Drives on the right-hand side of a road with a shoulder where you can pass

Why: You may pass on the left when the vehicle ahead is signalling a right turn, and where you are in a built-up area on a road with two lanes running in the same direction.
