Traffic Signal — traffic light signals used on South African roads.

Obey the signal shown: red means stop, amber means stop unless it is unsafe, green means go if it is safe.

Where

Where traffic density can be better controlled by traffic lights at intersections, junctions, pedestrian crossings, etc.

Purpose

To regulate traffic coming from different directions. Traffic signals are standard devices consisting of prescribed light signals that light up in specific sequences.

Action

These lights must be obeyed at all times: Red - Stop. Amber - Stop, except where it cannot be done safely. Constant amber arrow - Stop and wait until the flashing green arrow shows you may go. Green - Go if it is safe. Flashing green arrow - Right of way in the direction of the arrow. Constant green arrow - Shows the direction in which traffic must go. Flashing amber disc - Drive on carefully, but yield to pedestrians. Flashing red signal - Stop and carry on when it is safe, as at a stop sign. Flashing red arrow to the left - After stopping, you may turn if there is no traffic, yielding to pedestrians, oncoming traffic turning right, and traffic from the right. At a railway crossing a flashing red light means a train is coming and you may not drive on until it stops flashing.
