Question 1

How do I book a learner's licence test in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

First check your province: Gauteng and Eastern Cape residents can book online through NaTIS, while the Western Cape and the remaining provinces book in person at a DLTC. Then choose a testing centre and date, complete form LL1, pay the booking fee, pass the eye test, and arrive on the day with your ID and booking receipt.

Question 2

Can I book my learner's licence test online?

Accepted Answer

Only in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, which are the provinces NaTIS online booking currently supports. Register at online.natis.gov.za with your ID, cellphone and email, verify the account, choose a centre and slot, and pay where online payment is enabled. Western Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Northern Cape residents must book in person at a DLTC.

Question 3

Which provinces allow online learner's licence bookings?

Accepted Answer

Gauteng and the Eastern Cape support NaTIS online booking. The Western Cape runs its own computerised learner's licence testing process with in-person bookings, and the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and Northern Cape generally require booking at a DLTC counter, though some municipalities accept telephonic bookings. Availability changes, so confirm with the NaTIS portal or your nearest centre.

Question 4

How do I create a NaTIS online profile?

Accepted Answer

Go to online.natis.gov.za and click Register. Enter your ID number, cellphone number and email address. NaTIS will send a one-time PIN to your phone and a confirmation link to your email. Activate both, then sign in.

Question 5

What documents do I need for a learner's licence booking?

Accepted Answer

Take your South African ID or passport with a certified copy, two identical ID photos, proof of address (or an affidavit if the bill is not in your name), the completed LL1 form, and applicants aged 65+ need a medical certificate (form MC).

Question 6

How much does it cost to book a learner's licence test?

Accepted Answer

The booking fee is set by each provincial or municipal authority and varies by testing centre. Check with your chosen DLTC for the exact amount and keep your receipt, as it is required on test day.

Question 7

What payment methods does NaTIS accept?

Accepted Answer

Where online payment is enabled, NaTIS usually accepts card payments. If you book in person or the centre does not support online payment, you pay at the DLTC counter with the method accepted by that authority.

Question 8

Can I book a learner's test at any DLTC?

Accepted Answer

You can book at any DLTC that offers learner's licence tests, but you must attend that centre on the booked date. Choose a centre you can travel to easily, because missed slots are usually forfeited.

Question 9

What is the eye test for a learner's licence?

Accepted Answer

The screening checks your visual acuity and field of vision. It is done at the DLTC, or you may submit a valid eye test report from a registered optometrist. Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you use them.

Question 10

What happens if I miss my learner's licence test appointment?

Accepted Answer

A missed slot is usually forfeited and the booking fee is not refunded. Contact the centre as soon as possible with your booking reference and ID; some may accept a doctor's note for an emergency move.

Question 11

Can I reschedule my NaTIS booking online?

Accepted Answer

Only if you booked through NaTIS online in the first place, which means a Gauteng or Eastern Cape centre. Sign in and use the reschedule or cancel option where the centre allows it. If you booked in person, you must go back to the DLTC counter. Rules and cut-off dates differ by centre.

Question 12

How long is a South African learner's licence valid?

Accepted Answer

A learner's licence is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended. While it is valid, you may only drive under the supervision of a licensed driver.

Question 13

What does the K53 learner's licence test cover?

Accepted Answer

The test has three sections: road signs, signals and markings; rules of the road; and vehicle controls for the code you are applying for (code 1, 2 or 3). You must pass each section independently.

Question 14

What is the difference between Code 1, 2 and 3?

Accepted Answer

Code 1 is for motorcycles, Code 2 is for light motor vehicles (cars), and Code 3 is for heavy motor vehicles. Each code has its own vehicle-controls section in the test.

Question 15

How early should I book my learner's licence test?

Accepted Answer

Book as soon as you are ready. Busy metro centres are often full weeks ahead, so check a few nearby centres and take the earliest slot you can travel to.

Question 16

What happens if I fail the learner's test?

Accepted Answer

You must make a new booking and pay the booking fee again. There is no limit on retries, so use the waiting time to study the sections you found hardest.

Question 17

How much is a learner's licence in South Africa?

Accepted Answer

There is no single national price. Each province and municipality sets its own learner's licence booking fee, so the amount differs from one driving licence testing centre (DLTC) to the next. Phone your chosen centre or check its official tariff list before you go, and budget separately for ID photographs, a certified copy of your ID and, if you use one, an optometrist's eye test report.

Question 18

What do I pay for when I book a learner's licence test?

Accepted Answer

The booking fee covers your test slot and the processing of form LL1. Depending on the centre you may also pay for the eye screening, for the learner's licence card or paper licence once you pass, and for reprints if the document is lost. Ask for a full breakdown at the counter and keep every receipt.

Question 19

Do I pay again if I fail the learner's test?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A retest is a new booking, so you pay the booking fee again and take the next available slot. There is no limit on how many times you may retry, but each attempt costs the same as the first.

Question 20

Is the booking fee refundable if I miss my test?

Accepted Answer

Normally not. A missed slot is usually forfeited along with the fee. Contact the centre as soon as you know you cannot make it — some accept a doctor's note or allow a move if you ask well before the date.

Question 21

How much does it cost to practise for the learner's test?

Accepted Answer

Practising here is free. You can work through the study material, road signs and practice questions without paying, so the only unavoidable costs are the official booking fee and your documents.

Question 22

What payment methods do testing centres accept?

Accepted Answer

Where NaTIS online payment is enabled you can usually pay by card. If you book in person, you pay at the DLTC counter using whichever methods that authority accepts — many centres take cards, some are cash only. Confirm by phone so you are not turned away.

Question 23

What is the pass mark for the K53 learner's licence test?

Accepted Answer

You must pass each section on its own. On the standard paper that means 22 out of 28 for rules of the road, 23 out of 28 for road signs, signals and markings, and 6 out of 8 for vehicle controls. Falling short in one section fails the whole test, even if your overall total looks good.

Question 24

How many questions are in the learner's licence test?

Accepted Answer

The paper has 64 questions in total: 28 on rules of the road, 28 on road signs, signals and markings, and 8 on vehicle controls for the code you applied for. Question counts and pass marks are set by the testing authority and can differ slightly between centres.

Question 25

How many questions can I get wrong and still pass?

Accepted Answer

Six in rules of the road, five in road signs, and two in vehicle controls. Because the sections are marked separately, those allowances do not carry over — extra marks in signs cannot rescue a weak rules section.

Question 26

Do I fail if I only pass two of the three sections?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All three sections must reach their own pass mark in the same sitting. If one section falls short you rebook the full test and write every section again.

Question 27

How do I know when I am ready to write?

Accepted Answer

Use the mock exam in the app: it marks each section against the official pass mark. Aim to clear every section comfortably in several mock exams in a row, not just once, before you book.

Question 28

Is the vehicle controls section different for Code 1, 2 and 3?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Code 1 covers motorcycles, Code 2 light motor vehicles and Code 3 heavy motor vehicles, and each has its own controls questions. Study the set that matches the code on your booking.

Question 29

How long does the learner's licence test take?

Accepted Answer

The written test itself usually takes about an hour, but plan for most of the morning at the centre once queuing, document checks and the eye screening are counted in.

Question 30

When do I get my result?

Accepted Answer

Results are normally given the same day at the centre. If you pass, your learner's licence is issued there — it is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended.

Question 31

What must I take with me on test day?

Accepted Answer

Your ID document or passport, your booking receipt showing the date and time, and your glasses or contact lenses if you use them. Arrive early — centres work through a queue and a late arrival is treated as a missed slot.
